Columbia State Historic Park

Stroll down Main Street, popping into preserved buildings like the old general store, saloon, and print shop. Many of them are staffed by knowledgeable guides who explain how miners, merchants, and families lived during California's gold boom. If you're feeling adventurous, hop on a short stagecoach ride for a bumpy but fun loop around the park, it is a highlight for many visitors. For lunch, keep it simple and thematic: enjoy a hearty meal at a historic-style restaurant or grab a picnic and sit under the shade of oak trees. Afterward, treat yourself to something sweet, an old-fashioned candy shop or ice cream parlor fits the setting perfectly. Then it is a perfect time for trying your luck at gold panning along the nearby creek. It's surprisingly relaxing, and even finding a few tiny flakes gives you a sense of what drew thousands west during the Gold Rush.
Wear comfortable walking shoes and a hat to keep the sun off your face, because parking is just outside the historic zone (modern cars aren't allowed inside), then walk through the entrance where costumed interpreters greet visitors as if it is still the 1850s.
